Imariel de Guzman

My stay with the team has exposed me to different specified roles in managing fixed assets, sales returns and allowances, amortization of sales and costs, and balance sheet reconciliation, which left me with an exceptional experience.

What's your job about?

As a finance intern under the general ledger, I’m responsible for providing quality and effective assistance to the team in bringing accurate and timely financial information relevant to the company’s equity management. Since the general ledger serves as the summary of accounts, my role includes the adaptation and application of accounting principles and policies that the company uses. In this way, I can fully grasp the corporate standards and how accounting theoretical situations may differ in how they work in the real business world.

For my role, I dive into different accounts that involve retrieving and updating different Excel working files about the AR status, validating the current fixed asset count, verifying the remaining contractual years or months in the amortization of costs and sales, ensuring that the balances in the Excel and what is posted in the ERP match for the balance sheet reconciliation, clearing of finished projects in the tracker, and checking of the remaining unbilled and unearned revenue. Collaboration, integrity, support our people, and customer focus were some of Emerson’s core values that are evident in the daily basis of work and are key essentials in accomplishing workloads.

What's your background?

I was born in Caloocan City but raised in Quezon City. Being the eldest in the family made me think about what the future looks like even at a young age. An interest in finance was piqued when one of my cousins graduated with a degree in Financial Management and currently works in a bank. From there, I was ignited to pursue my chosen program and aspire to become a CPA. With this determination, I decided to be an officer of the Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (JPIA) and Society of Scholars (SOS) organizations where my leadership, interpersonal, and time management skills elevated. Aside from this, I realized how good camaraderie and collaboration impact the results of what we do, not just internally but how we drive the influence of positivity and excellence in the whole school community. Being an officer for two consecutive years and a scholar for the duration of my program, I instilled great values of courage, perseverance, integrity, competence, adaptability, accountability, self-awareness, and gratitude that are crucial to my life journey as a person and a professional.

Our internship period came, and I applied to various companies and sought roles in the Finance Department. With God’s grace, I became a finance intern in the general ledger team at Emerson Manila. My internship experience has been an integral part of who I am today, influenced my perspective towards corporate accounting, and helped me recognize the great community of people in the shared services of the company.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Definitely! Someone willing to learn and adapt while also displaying a great interest and focus can do my job. Emerson provides an extensive training program that allows growth and development, preparing an individual to reach greater heights. The program includes work instructions to study, be familiar with, and apply with the help and guidance of professional leaders who are delighted to share their expertise. Thus, with the right mind, attitude, and values, one may enjoy and do this role regardless of the difference in the background and variety of skills a person has.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

Financial reporting involves keeping financial information accurate, timely, relevant, and complete. The coolest thing about my job is how challenging yet fulfilling it is at the same time when financial variances are found during the process, and I’ve learned how to properly deal with it. Also, I was thrilled when my theme ideas for the operations meeting weren’t only considered but pushed through. Moreover, my stay with the team has exposed me to different specified roles in managing fixed assets, sales returns and allowances, amortization of sales and costs, and balance sheet reconciliation, which left me with an exceptional experience.

What are the limitations of your job?

Since Global Financial Services (GFS) is part of Emerson’s shared services, my job is meant to be accomplished through collaborative engagements with other pillars or business units. The existence and practice of segregation of duties and delegation of authority can serve as a limitation in the completion of the process or report that I do. Also, although each one is deployed according to the maximization of skills, I still need the approval, advice, and guidance from my colleagues in producing better and unified results. Thus, collaboration, as one of Emerson’s core values, is significant in reaching both short- and long-term operational goals.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  1. Small progress is still progress – I believe that we don’t feel good every day and aren’t that productive and passionate every single time, but if we’re still able to do our daily activities and accomplish something, it's still great.
  2. Be strong, courageous, and faithful – Be aware and appreciate your support people, seize moments and opportunities, and believe in yourself and God.
  3. When your ambition is big, then your efforts should be even bigger – I just saw this in the pantry at Emerson Manila. I find this having the same idea with the bible verse “2 Corinthians 9:6.”
