What's your job about?

As a Finance Intern on the Accounts Payable team, I played a key role in supporting AP specialists to ensure the accurate and timely processing of daily invoices, a critical function in maintaining the company’s financial operations. My daily responsibilities included facilitating the review of the Delegation of Authority (DOA) and ensuring that all financial transactions were properly authorized. I also validated Purchase and Work Orders within Oracle Content Management to guarantee accurate record-keeping and processing. Additionally, I was responsible for validating tax invoices and consistently updating our Purchase Orders tracker within the system. A significant part of my role involved updating Purchase Voucher numbers in our accounting system, essential for maintaining accurate financial records. Through these tasks, I gained a comprehensive understanding of the end-to-end processes involved in managing accounts payable and the importance of accuracy and efficiency in financial management.

What's your background?

I was born in the province of Leyte but grew up in Quezon City, where my family moved in search of better opportunities. My formal education began a year after we moved. Since preschool, I have been a consistent academic achiever and have actively participated in various academic and extracurricular activities that have helped develop my leadership skills. From a young age, I had a natural affinity for numbers and took an early interest in business by helping my family manage finances in their small ventures. In fact, my entrepreneurial spirit led me to start selling homemade pastillas and graham balls to my classmates during junior high school to earn extra income. This enthusiasm for business was a major factor in my decision to pursue a business-related program in college.

Currently, I am a graduating student at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines—Manila, where I am completing a Bachelor of Science in Management Accounting. My academic journey has been complemented by my passion for community service, which I express through my involvement in "Rotaract," an international organization where I have held various leadership roles related to my field of study. These experiences have not only shaped my career aspirations but also strengthened my commitment to making a positive impact both in my community and the business world.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Yes, someone with a different background could do my job, but certain skills and characteristics are essential. Strong analytical abilities and a solid understanding of financial principles are crucial, as the role involves managing accounts and ensuring accuracy in financial records. Attention to detail is key, especially when processing invoices and validating financial data. Additionally, effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively are important since the job often requires coordinating with your team and supervisor. While a background in finance or business is advantageous, these core skills can enable success in this role regardless of one's specific background.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

The coolest thing about my job as an intern is the satisfaction of knowing that my attention to detail directly impacts the company’s financial integrity. I particularly enjoy validating invoices and ensuring that all financial records are accurate. It’s rewarding to catch and resolve discrepancies, as these moments show me that my work is essential in maintaining smooth financial operations. Knowing that my efforts help safeguard the company from potential errors gives me a strong sense of purpose and fulfillment.

What are the limitations of your job?

As an intern, one limitation of my role is that decision-making primarily rests with specialists and supervisors, which means I focus on executing tasks rather than making high-level decisions. The job requires meticulous attention to detail and can be demanding, particularly during peak periods or when resolving discrepancies. While it’s not physically demanding, the need for constant precision can be challenging. Despite these challenges, these aspects provide valuable learning opportunities and experience, helping me develop a strong foundation for future roles in the field.
